We all know that breastmilk is best for your baby, and the advantages of breastfeeding extend well beyond basic nutrition. To add, the breastmilk contains all the necessary vitamins and nutrients all the babies need in the first six months of life. Breast milk is also packed with disease-fighting minerals that protect babies from illnesses. In line with creating awareness on the importance of breastfeeding, a Global Big Latch On event is set on August 6, 2016 (Saturday) at the Limketkai Mall Event Center. It is called “Hakab Na!”, an event where mothers gather and simultaneously breastfeed our babies at the same time. “Hakab Na!” aims to gather 300 families on Saturdays. Breast milk is perfectly designed to meet the individual nutritional and immunological needs of infants, and the act of breastfeeding provides additional benefits to infants and their mothers. Despite all of its advantages, breastfeeding is not easy. A mother needs to overcome certain barriers to breastfeeding such as community and cultural pressures, health worker shortage, lack of maternity legislation and aggressive formula milk marketing to succeed breastfeeding her child up to 2 years and beyond. Filipino culture tends to be conservative and think breasts should remain unexposed for its sexual representation when in fact breasts main purpose is for our children’s nourishment.
