Located at the heart of the metropolis, the San Agustin Metropolitan Cathedral is a sign of the first Spanish settlement in the region. To add, it is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro covering Northern Mindanao and CARAGA Region.
The symbolic church also stood to the test of time. History tells that the original church was built with native materials in 1845 by Augustinian Friars. It was also destroyed half a century ago during the World War II and was rebuilt Archbishop James Hayes. The church structure also indicates an old Gothic architectural design with old glass windows donated from New York by American Catholics. To date, only the wooden cross has survived after the original church was destroyed.
