Cagayan de Oro is rich with its history dated before the Spaniards came in. Where did the name Cagayan de Oro originated? When is the Charter Day of CDO?

The name Cagayan can be followed from the time when the spanish friars arrived in 1622. Documents from the 16th century call the place as Cagayan.

Emmanuel Pelaez added de Oro to Cagayan to recognize the gold mining activities in the area that translates to the City of the River of Gold.

Inhabitants were traced as early as 377 C.E. Early Kagay-anons pay tribute to Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat, the Sultan of Maguindanao.

Two Spanish Augustinians missionaries came in contact to the natives at around 1622 to persuade the Datu Salangsang, to transfer his settlement down river, to the present-day Gaston Park.

Spanish dominance was felt in the city at around 1738.

In February 27, 1872, Governor-General Carlos María de La Torre declared Cagayan as the permanent capital of Segundo Distrito de Misamis and was later known as Cagayán de Misamis.

Cagayan became the seat capital for 3 provinces (Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte) in 1883.

It was on March 31, 1900 when Americans occupied Cagayán de Misamis.

The battle of Cagayan de Misamis happened on April 7, 1900 wherein General Nicolas Capistrano and Filipino fighters fought against the Americans.

On June 4, 1900, yhe Americans were successfully repulsed by the Kagay-anons forces led by Mayor Don Apolinar Vélez at the historic Battle of Makahambus.

Cagayan de Oro emerged into a booming commerce and trade center in Mindanao during the early 40’s to 50’s.

President Elpidio Quirino signed Republic Act No. 521, on June 15, 1950, which granted the status of a chartered city through the efforts of then Cagayan de Oro Congressman Emmanuel Pelaez.

November 22, 1983 – Cagayan de Oro was then declared a highly-urbanized city by the Ministry of Local Government.
